Do you struggle to get up while others are already going? Are you sharp at 10 pm and unable to string two ideas together at 8 am? This is neither laziness nor a lack of willpower: it's your chronotype.
What this test is based on
14 questions inspired by the Horne and Östberg Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire, the scientific reference in chronobiology, combined with Dr Michael Breus's four-chronotype model. The test also measures how fragile your sleep is, which is what sets the dolphin profile apart from the other three.

What is a chronotype?
Your chronotype is your body's natural preference for certain sleep and wake times. It isn't a habit or a choice: it stems from your internal biological clock, housed in a small brain structure called the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and it is partly determined by your genes — notably variants of the PER3 gene.
In other words, if you struggle to surface at 7 am while your colleague is already going, that isn't a character flaw. Your two internal clocks are simply set to different times. Knowing which one is yours lets you stop fighting yourself and place the important moments of the day where your body is actually available.
The four chronotypes
The Lion: the early riser
Spontaneous waking before 6:30 am, peak performance in the three hours that follow, rapid shutdown in the evening. The lion achieves effortlessly what others attempt with multiple alarms — but pays for every extended evening.
The Bear: the solar rhythm
This is the profile of half of us. The bear rises with daylight, works well in the morning, takes a clear hit around 2 pm and falls asleep easily at night. Its main challenge is consistency, not timing.
The Wolf: the late type
The wolf only truly wakes in late morning and reaches its creative peak after 5 pm. Constrained by standard hours, it lives permanently out of step and develops a chronic tiredness that weekend rest never fully repays.
The Dolphin: fragile sleep
The dolphin sleeps with one eye open. Its nervous system stays partly on alert through the night, multiplying micro-awakenings and stretching out the time it takes to fall asleep. This profile often overlaps with anxiety and hypervigilance, and it benefits most from breathing regulation techniques.
Can you change your chronotype?
Not fundamentally — the genetic component remains. However, a chronotype can be shifted by one to two hours, and it changes naturally with age: teenagers run late, older adults run early. If your natural rhythm is causing you difficulty, these levers genuinely work:
- Get natural light within an hour of waking — it is the most powerful signal for advancing your internal clock.
- Keep the same wake-up time seven days a week, weekends included.
- Dim the lights sharply 90 minutes before your target bedtime.
- Shift your bedtime in 15-minute steps per week rather than by an hour at once.
- Schedule physical activity in late afternoon for a wolf, in the morning for a lion.
Chronotype and mental health
Living long-term out of sync with your internal clock has a measurable cost. Studies link substantial social jet lag to more depressive symptoms, greater irritability and poorer emotional regulation. This isn't inevitable: realigning your schedule even partly with your real chronotype often improves mood within a few weeks, before total sleep time has even increased.
